Row covers help provide some frost protection and are a good way to protect from some insects. Tomatoes, squash, peppers, melons and cukes need warmer soil and frost protection.
Trees should not be fertilized after August 1. Fertilizing in the fall promotes tender growth that is subject to winter damage. It is very important to make sure that your trees are deep watered just before the ground freezes and to also start watering when the ground thaws. We do not have a lot of snow cover therefore trees are in need of water in early spring.
February and March are the most common times to prune your fruit trees. Be sure when you prune that you sterilize your shears with every cut to avoid spreading fire blight. You may also spray at this time with a dormant oil to smother aphids before the leaves uncurl.
